Artystone

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Artystone ( ancient Greek Ἀρτυστώνη , ancient Persian Artaštuna , Elamite Irtašduna ) was a daughter of the Persian king Cyrus II , sister or half-sister of Atossa and a wife of Darius I. She lived from the end of the 6th to the beginning of the 5th century BC. Chr.

Life

Artystone was the daughter of Cyrus II; her mother was probably Kassandane . It was therefore assigned to the Persian dynasty of the Achaemenids . After the marriage, Dareios I referred to her as "his favorite consort". She bore the sons of Arsames and Gobryas to her husband .

Elamite administrative documents found in Persepolis bear their seal. According to this evidence, large estates with several palaces in the Persis belonged to her property and were administered by her personally. Artystone, twice titled as a princess , also seems to have often hosted luxurious banquets - now and then together with her son Arshames II. Her husband Darius I showed her his admiration by having a golden statue of her put up.
