Sister Ascensión del Corazón de Jesús MDR (born Florentina Nicol Goñi ) (born March 14, 1868 in Tafalla , Navarra , Spain ; † February 24, 1940 in Pamplona , Spain) was a Spanish nun and founder of the order . She is venerated as a blessed in the Catholic Church .

Life

Florentina Nicol Goñi joined the Dominican Sisters in Huesca at the age of 17 and took the religious name Ascensión del Sagrado Corazón . In Huesca the sisters ran a college where Sister Ascensión taught for 28 years. In 1912 the school was closed by the government. The Apostolic Vicar of Puerto Maldonado , Bishop Ramon Zubieta y Les , invited some sisters to establish schools in the Amazon basin in northern Peru . In 1914 the sisters arrived in the Madre de Dios department . The then master of the Dominican order , Fr. Ludwig Theissling, proposed the establishment of a missionary order, to which Sister Ascensión was called. In 1918 the Misioneras Dominicas del Santísimo Rosario (Missionary Dominican Sisters of the Rosary) were brought into being. Sister Ascensión later became the first general superior and held that office almost until her death. Today the Missionary Order is active in 21 countries with 770 sisters.

beatification

Sr. Ascensión del Corazón de Jesús was beatified together with Sr. Marianne Cope on May 14, 2005 in Rome . Her feast day in the liturgy is February 24th .
