The Aspromonte ( Italian Rauer Berg ) is a mountain range in the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria in southern Calabria , Italy . Closely enclosed by the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas, the mountain range covers the center of the southern tip of the Italian boot. The Aspromonte, with its sometimes bizarre rock formations, is criss-crossed by narrow valleys with stony river beds that are mostly dried out in summer because it rains mainly in winter. The highest point is the Montalto with a height of 1955  m slm

An area of 80,000  hectares is protected as the Aspromonte National Park .

The vegetation consists of olive, orange and bergamot cultures and macchia in lower elevations . Extensive oak, holm oak and chestnut forests grow in central locations , and arable farming is also practiced there. Pine, spruce and fir trees grow in the highest elevations. The fauna includes wild cats , wolves and eagles eagles . In the climatic health resort of Gambàrie ( 1600  m slm , part of the municipality of Santo Stefano in Aspromonte ) winter sports are also possible. However, you are strongly warned against hiking alone or without a local guide, as many hiking trails are poorly marked and the risk of getting lost in the wild is high. In addition, the Aspromonte serves the Calabrian criminal organization 'Ndrangheta as a retreat.

Grekaniko , a dialect derived from ancient and central Greek , is spoken in some villages in southern Aspromonte . The language, which was introduced to the region either during the Magna Graecia or Byzantine times, has survived in the difficult-to-reach mountain villages and has recently been revived.

history

On August 29, 1862, the so-called Battle of Aspromonte took place here between volunteers under the command of Giuseppe Garibaldi and regular Piedmontese troops. The battle ended in a victory for the Piedmontese, Garibaldi was injured in its course. In the last decade of the 19th century Giuseppe Musolino , a Brigant born in the region in 1875 , was active with his followers in Aspromonte, he was nicknamed re dell 'Aspromonte (King of Aspromonte). The writer Corrado Alvaro , who was born in San Luca , described the life of the residents in the collection of stories Gente in Aspromonte (English title: The Shepherds of Aspromonte ), published in 1930 , which is considered to be groundbreaking for the development of independent southern Italian literature.
