Audi plant in Brussels

Audi Brussels , formerly Volkswagen Vorst , is an Audi AG production site in the Brussels municipality of Vorst .

history

In 1948, Pierre D'Ieteren concluded an agreement with Volkswagenwerk GmbH for car imports. The foundation stone for a production hall in Vorst was laid on September 1, 1948, and the first Studebaker rolled off the production line in April 1949, even before it was completed . From 1954 the plant also manufactured the VW Beetle - at that time the plant extended over 314,000 square meters and produced around 75 cars per day with 750 employees. In 1960, Studebakers' production ended and the plant concentrated on the Volkswagen and Porsche brands .

D'Ieteren originally remained the owner of the factory until it was completely taken over by Volkswagen in 1970. After 1,143,664 cars were built, the last Beetle rolled off the production line in 1975. As a result, Volkswagen Brussel NV - Bruxelles SA produced VW Passat and from 1980 also VW Golf . Later the productions included the Audi A3 as well as VW Lupo and VW Polo at times .

On November 21, 2006, the announcement followed that production of the Golf at Volkswagen Vorst in 2009 was to be discontinued and that more than 3,500 of the 5,000 jobs at that time were to be cut. At that time, 200,000 cars rolled off the production line every year. In 2007 the name of the plant was changed to Audi Brussels and production was concentrated on the Audi A1 .

In January 2016 it became known that the new generation of the Audi A1 will be produced in Martorell , by Seat . In return, the location in Brussels will become the key plant for electromobility in the Audi Group. A separate battery assembly is being set up in Brussels for this purpose.
