The Taimyr Autonomous Okrug of the Dolgan and Nenets ( Russian Таймырский (Долгано-Ненецкий) автономный округ , Taimyrski (Dolgano-Nenezki) awtonomny okrug ) is a former federation subject in northern Russia . On January 1, 2007, the Autonomous Okrug, like the Evenks Autonomous Okrug , was united with the Krasnoyarsk Territory after a referendum on April 17, 2005 . The Taimyrski Dolgano-Nenezki rajon (" Rajon Taimyr of the Dolganen and Nenets ") has existed within the boundaries of the Autonomous Okrug .

The autonomous district covered an area of 862,100 km² and had 39,378 inhabitants on January 1, 2005.

The huge, almost deserted area lies on the Arctic Ocean and includes the Taimyr Peninsula with the Byrranga Mountains , the Taimyr Depression and the north of the Central Siberian Mountains , the Putorana Mountains . The northern tip of the peninsula, Cape Chelyuskin , is the northernmost point in the world that is not on an island. The Severnaya Zemlya archipelago also belonged to the autonomous district.

The most important rivers are the Yenisei , the Pyassina and the Khatanga .

Coal and natural gas production is only just beginning in the region.

The capital of the autonomous region was Dudinka . The mining town of Norilsk , which actually lay within the territorial boundaries, was administratively part of the Krasnoyarsk Territory . Half of the population lives in the capital Dudinka.
