Axel Horstmann (classical philologist)

Axel E.-A. Horstmann (born August 26, 1945 in Halle (Westf.) ) Is a German classical philologist.

Horstmann studied classical philology , philosophy and Protestant theology , received his doctorate in 1971 at the Ruhr University Bochum under Hellmut Flashar and completed his habilitation in philosophy in Hamburg in 1986. He teaches there as a private lecturer in philosophy.

He was a member of the management of the Volkswagen Foundation , Hanover, with responsibility for the humanities and social sciences as well as the Lower Saxony Vorab. From 2010 to 2014 he was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Hanns Lilje Foundation in succession to Jürgen Fitschen .

Philological fields of work are the Hellenistic poet Theokritos and the history of classical philology , especially August Boeckh .
