The vehicles of type III b were passenger steam locomotives of the Grand Ducal Baden State Railway . The Grand Ducal Badische Staatseisenbahn put converted locomotives of classes III and III a into this class.

Of the types Badische III and Badische III a , 70 machines were converted between 1881 and 1891. A new, more powerful three-section boiler with a larger grate surface was installed in all of them. Since this was longer than the first boiler, the frame of the III had to be lengthened; with the IIIa, it was sufficient to add a buffer beam at the front.

The boiler had a standing boiler of the Belpaire design with a moderately raised ceiling. A large steam dome sat on the rear part of the boiler.
