The four vehicles of type III b of the Grand Ducal Baden State Railways were steam locomotives that were originally built for 1600 mm broad gauge .
With the further expansion of the route network in the Rhine Valley, more locomotives were also required. A performance and consumption program was drawn up by the state railway. The delivery orders were ultimately awarded to the Meyer factory and the Karlsruhe mechanical engineering company . The vehicles of the latter were classified in category III a . Both companies worked together during construction, so that the locomotives differed only slightly. Meyer's favorable offer in particular led to the order being placed.
The locomotives were based on the construction of the EXPANSION of type Ib . With the large driving wheels of 1.83 m, a high speed could be achieved. However, the pulling power turned out to be too low. When starting up the 1: 250 slope near Ettlingen , six to eight men had to be pushed. The steam generation is said to have been remarkably good.
The locomotives were equipped with lining frames as a support frame and two plate frames for the steam engine, inner cylinders, Sharp kettles and a semicircular standing kettle . In addition, a Meyer expansion control with double rails and a fork control for the basic slide was used. Compared to the locomotives of type III a old, the Meyer's locomotives had a central standpipe as a blowpipe .
The vehicles - like all Baden locomotives at the time - were converted to standard gauge in 1854 and remained in use until the 1860s.
The vehicles had a Tender of type 3 T 5.40.
