The station Ratingen West is located at the Troisdorf-Mülheim-Speldorf railway , which is also called Ratingen West track here. This is not used for passenger traffic, but is heavily used by freight traffic. A reactivation in passenger traffic is associated with problems, but is being sought from various sides. Compared to Ratingen Ost train station on the Ruhr Valley Railway, it is a little closer to Ratingen city center.

history

The station was opened in 1874 under the name Ratingen Rheinisch by the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft . After this was taken over by the Prussian state , the station was renamed Ratingen West . The Ratingen BME station of the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft on the Ruhr Valley Railway was named Ratingen Ost . In 1903 the branching Angertal Railway was completed. In 1983 the connecting curve to the Angertalbahn was shut down, the line is only connected to the north, at Lintorf station.

Planning

According to the local transport plan in the Mettmann district , which also includes Ratingen, the connection from Ratingen to Duisburg by public transport is very cumbersome, as it always goes through Düsseldorf beforehand. In addition, the districts of Ratingen along the Ratinger western route Lintorf (approx. 15,200 inhabitants), Tiefenbroich (approx. 6500 inhabitants) and Ratingen-West (approx. 17,900 inhabitants) with a total of almost 40,000 inhabitants are not exactly poor in population. It is therefore planned to reactivate the Ratingen West train station in local rail transport . According to the local transport plan of the VRR , which orders the local rail transport services, reactivation in passenger traffic is currently not possible, as the western route of Ratingen is so heavily used in freight traffic that it would have to be expanded to three tracks for future passenger traffic. In addition, the trains behind should Dusseldorf-Rath not like the S6 on the Ruhrtalbahn and the Cologne-Duisburg railway to the main station Dusseldorf , but via Dusseldorf-Grafenberg and a new curve for railway Dusseldorf-Wuppertal and the breakpoint Dusseldorf-Flingern to Düsseldorf Main station lead, whereby Düsseldorf-Grafenberg would be developed by a new stopping point Düsseldorf Schlüterstrasse . Due to the high volume of goods and safety regulations that prohibit passenger and freight trains from encountering in long tunnels, a separate tunnel would have to be built parallel to the Staufenplatz tunnel. This increased the investment costs from the original 25 million to at least 140 million euros. A tour from Düsseldorf-Rath analogous to the S6 reduces the market value. As a result, the IGVP project would not be eligible for funding in the short term.

Various agencies are trying to reactivate passenger traffic, as several development projects are planned along their stations. Another demonstration drive for stakeholders and citizens was carried out in September 2017 .
