The Sittard – Herzogenrath railway is an electrified railway line between the Dutch city of Sittard and the German city of Herzogenrath . It was put into operation in 1896.

history

The route was nationalized in 1899. In the Second World War , cross-border passenger traffic between Landgraaf and Herzogenrath was discontinued. The section between Sittard and Heerlen was electrified in 1949 and the section between Heerlen and Landgraaf together with the section to Kerkrade of the million line in 1986.

From May 31, 1992, passenger traffic was again carried out by StadtExpress trains, initially running every two hours between Aachen Hauptbahnhof and Heerlen , while the previous two-hour international trains on the Aachen – Maastricht line were abandoned.

In 2018 the Landgraaf – Herzogenrath section was electrified. The transition between the traction current systems 15 kV alternating current in Germany and 1.5 kV direct current takes place in Haanrade in the Netherlands .

business

As the first actual expansion stage of the Euregiobahn regional rail system , the route from Heerlen via Herzogenrath was introduced in June 2001. The Euregiobahn last ran hourly from Heerlen via Stolberg (Rhineland) main station ( wing ) to Stolberg Altstadt and Langerwehe or Düren . When the timetable changed in December 2015, the Heerlen – Herzogenrath route was removed from the Euregiobahn network and operated as a regional express (referred to as Sneltrein in the Netherlands ) with line number RE 18 and the name LIMAX initially only in shuttle service with diesel multiple units between Heerlen and Herzogenrath . After the electrification of the section between Herzogenrath and Landgraaf in December 2018, the LIMAX operation was to be expanded from Arriva to Aachen main station. However, this was delayed because the planned electric multiple units were not registered in Germany in time. There was therefore only one replacement rail service between Aachen and Heerlen . Regular operation of the LIMAX began on January 27, 2019; an extension beyond Maastricht to Liège is planned in the future.
