history

Rail bus in Herzogenrath

1852 Herzogenrath was the connection to the Aachen-Mönchengladbach railway , a year later became the still existing reception building opened. In 1857 a loading track for coal was laid for the Anna mine in neighboring Alsdorf , in 1890 a new line via Alsdorf towards Stolberg (Rhineland) and in 1892 to Heerlen in the Netherlands was put into operation. From 1890 to 1950 there was a railway depot in Herzogenrath .

In December 2004 the line to Stolberg with the stops Herzogenrath-Alt- Merkstein and Herzogenrath-August-Schmidt-Platz was reopened and in December 2005 the line was extended to Alsdorf- Annapark . From 2007 to 2008, the platforms were rebuilt from around 38 centimeters to a height of 76 centimeters and the usable length was greatly reduced to 170 m. In addition, the underpass was modernized and equipped with two lifts for barrier-free access to the platforms. Since the timetable change on December 13, 2009, Herzogenrath station has been re-connected to the long-distance network with some intercity trains on the Aachen - Berlin and Leipzig - Cologne routes, which have been running every day except Saturdays since December 16, 2013.

With the opening of the renovated station building in March 2007, the FrauenKomm.Gleis1 was also opened in the station building. In addition to various event rooms for exhibitions and seminars, a bistro is also available for all citizens.

In April 2011, Queen Beatrix , Princess Máxima of the Netherlands and Crown Prince Willem-Alexander von Oranje-Nassau used the station for their state visit. They were received by Prime Minister Hannelore Kraft on the special train from the Netherlands .

The station has been modernized and expanded again since 2015. An electric charging station was set up in summer 2016. The LIMAX has been connecting Maastricht and Aachen since December 2018, and the line is to be extended to Liège in the future. Arriva , a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn , has won the concession to operate various bus and train lines in Limburg from December 11, 2016, and operates this connection with multi-system trains of the Stadler Flirt type . For this purpose, the railway line between Herzogenrath and Heerlen was electrified in 2018 and received a system separation point in Haanrade for the system change from 15 kV, 16.7 Hz to the Dutch direct current system with a voltage of 1.5 kV. Since the Euregiobahn route to Stolberg is also to be electrified, the overhead line in the station area is being completely renewed and rebuilt. So you can separate the overhead lines between DB Netz and EVS cleanly.

Planning

In May 2020, the EVS started the construction of a new 230 meter long central platform between tracks 5 and 7. For this purpose, 11.24 million euros were made available by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the EU. Track 6 is to be dismantled for the platform, which will then take up the area that has become free. Access should be possible via a ramp from the existing pedestrian tunnel, which previously ran under the entire railway structure and is currently only blocked by a wall with a metal door from the entrance to tracks 2 and 3. The new platform will initially serve the LIMAX in particular, later the Euregiobahn will also stop there. For the connection of the Stolberg – Herzogenrath railway line , the construction of a flyover is planned so that the Euregiobahn coming from Alsdorf can reach the new platform without crossing.

Operating facilities

The station has four platform tracks, of which track 55 is a butt track and is usually not used. Additional butt tracks for traffic on the line to Stolberg were located directly next to track 55 north of the reception building, but were largely dismantled for the construction of the parking garage. Only platform 70, without a platform, remains, but ends further north in front of the parking garage. Other tracks are to the west of the platforms and some of them are still used today to park freight and work trains.

The operation of the station is shared between Deutsche Bahn and the EVS Euregio Verkehrsschienennetz . Deutsche Bahn operates tracks 1-4, butt tracks 41 and 44 and the track leading into the station on the Heerlen line. The remaining operating facilities including the tracks to and from the railway line to Stolberg via Alsdorf are operated by EVS.

Herzogenrath is one of four stations on the Aachen – Mönchengladbach line that is not yet fully controlled by an electronic signal box . The operation in the station has been regulated since 1985 by the relay interlocking Hf of the type SpDrS600 at the northern entrance to the station. The signal box of the Kohlscheid station, which is located further in the direction of Aachen, is also remotely controlled from this. Between 1915 and 1985 the station had two mechanical signal boxes at the northern and southern entrance to the station. The northern dispatcher interlocking Hf was also responsible for the routes to Heerlen and Alsdorf, the southern one was called Hs. The EVS operating part is controlled by its electronic interlocking in Stolberg Hauptbahnhof .
