Krefeld-Oppum is a stopping point and former train station in Krefeld, which is located on three railway lines. It consists of a passenger station, a railway repair shop, in which ICE trains are also serviced, and a former freight yard.
history
The station was opened in 1877 by the Rheinische Eisenbahngesellschaft , and goods traffic on the Duisburg-Ruhrort – Mönchengladbach line had existed since 1866. In 1892, the railway repair workshop was opened. With the opening of the train station, the population of Oppum rose sharply.
Investments
Railway repair shop
The first railway repair shop was opened in Oppum in 1892, at that time as the Royal Railway Main Repair Shop Oppum . Today, modern vehicle repairs for Deutsche Bahn are carried out in the ICE maintenance depot in Krefeld . Almost 1000 people are employed here. ICE and electric multiple units for local transport are overhauled and all vehicle components are checked, renewed or refurbished. This includes maintenance of air conditioning systems , bogies , wheel sets , but also smaller parts such as shock absorbers . Several million euros were invested in the modernization of the plant from an economic and environmental point of view.
In the course of history, the railway repair shop has developed significantly. In 1924 it became a repair shop , and in 1955 it became a central point of contact for shock absorbers in passenger coaches. ICE trains have also been serviced there since 2003; a year later it was renamed DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung GmbH .
The facility is one of the 15 major factories in which Deutsche Bahn vehicles are maintained. It is a total of 202,000 m² and extends over four high-tech halls, each with three departments, which allow all three levels of an ICE to be reached at the same time.
Former freight yard
The Krefeld-Oppum freight yard was located about 700 meters west of the passenger station in the area of the street "Am Verschubbahnhof". It has now been shut down. The city of Krefeld plans to use the site as an industrial park.
Passenger station
The passenger station is now a stop on the two railway lines on the Left Lower Rhine and Duisburg – Mönchengladbach . It is only used in local transport.
4,000 commuters get on and off Oppum every day. Access is through a tunnel under the tracks. The weekly Oppums market takes place near the train station.
