The Rhein-Münsterland-Express is a local rail passenger service in North Rhine-Westphalia . The regional express with the number RE 7 runs every hour on weekdays (Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays only every two hours) from Rheine in a southerly direction to Münster . From there it travels southwest and every 60 minutes via Hamm , Hagen , Wuppertal , Solingen to Cologne and finally northwest via Neuss to Krefeld .

history

Class 112 with double-decker cars in November 2015 near Krefeld

Today's RE 7 is the successor to the SE Stadt-Express line from Münster via Wuppertal and Cologne to Aachen.

From 1998, with the introduction of the “integral cycle schedule” ITF 1 , the line then ran as a regional express from Münster only to Düren. With the ITF 2 , the line was extended in December 2002 in the north to Rheine and in the west again to Aachen. Since the RE 9 " Rhein-Sieg-Express " redesigned in 2002 proved to be very susceptible to delays, the RE 7 exchanged the branch on the left bank of the Rhine with it in June 2003 and has been traveling to Krefeld ever since. By eliminating an intersection at the same level in Cologne, mutual hindrances are avoided.

In order to stabilize the timetable, the line was partially converted from class 111 electric locomotives to class 112 in 2006 and the Rhein-Münsterland-Express has ended every two hours in Münster since then until December 2015. These measures eventually normalized the situation. As part of the modernization offensive 2, one of the two disused platforms at Rheine station was reactivated, which means that six instead of four platform edges are available. The train can therefore turn around at the platform without any platform conflicts with the Intercity on the Emsland line . In return, the regional train line RB 68 was discontinued in December 2015.

The line was operated hourly by DB Regio NRW until December 2015 . Long sections of the RE 7 run parallel to S-Bahn lines. According to the VRR's 2007 quality report, the RE 7 was almost four minutes late in 2007. In the VRR it was therefore the line with the third largest susceptibility to delays behind the NRW-Express and the Wupper-Express . The rate of unforeseeable train cancellations was 2.6%, making the line above the average for the other VRR lines.

Operated by National Express since 2015

Rhein-Münsterland-Express with double traction Talent 2

As part of a new contract for the major transport contract between DB Regio NRW and VRR, it was agreed to harmonize the contract terms. The operation of the line from the timetable change on December 13, 2015 was put out to tender together with the Rhein-Wupper-Bahn . At this point in time, the RE 7 should also stop again in Wuppertal-Vohwinkel and Cologne-Mülheim .

A bidding consortium of the companies National Express Rail and IntEgro Verkehr was awarded the contract and took over both lines for the timetable change in December 2015. Deutsche Bahn, as the loser, made use of an opportunity to appeal, but the public procurement tribunal at the Münster district government found no violation of public procurement law.

National Express Rail had ordered Talent 2 multiple units from Bombardier to provide these services . However, the planned stops in Wuppertal-Vohwinkel and Cologne-Mülheim were not implemented.

Offer

Since December 2015, National Express has been serving the Rhein-Münsterland-Express as scheduled with double units consisting of five-part Talent 2 multiple units . In the configuration ordered, a double traction offers 510 seats.

The Rhein-Münsterland-Express started on May 24, 1998 with push-pull trains made up of class 111 electric locomotives and five n-type cars ; the latter were exchanged for three double-deck cars when the timetable changed on November 5, 2000 . Although the space capacity was increased slightly as a result, it later became apparent that it was still too small, which is why the Rhein-Münsterland-Express was supplemented by another double-decker car for the timetable change on December 15, 2002.

Until the timetable change in December 2015, push- pull trains with class 112 electric locomotives were used as planned on the Rhein-Münsterland-Express , and since 2013 largely again with class 111 locomotives, each with four double-decker cars. Up until 2011, two additional rounds were made on the weekend between Krefeld and Cologne with class 110 electric locomotives and five n-cars .

Train run

The Rhein-Münsterland-Express uses the following railway lines on its way:

  1. Rheine – Münster railway line (full length)
  2. Münster – Hamm railway line (full length)
  3. Hamm – Hagen railway line (full length)
  4. Railway line Dortmund – Wuppertal (from Hagen Hbf)
  5. Railway line Wuppertal – Düsseldorf (to the Linden / Gruiten junction)
  6. Gruiten – Cologne-Deutz railway line (to Cologne-Mülheim)
  7. Railway line Duisburg – Cologne-Deutz (from Cologne-Mülheim)
  8. Hohenzollern Bridge
  9. Cologne – Krefeld railway line (entire length)

reliability

In 2015, the average delay was 3.7 minutes per trip. This is a significant deterioration compared to the previous year, when the average delay was 2.7 minutes per trip. In 2018, the average delay was over 4 minutes.
