Essen Zollverein Nord is a train - stop in Essen district Katernberg at the Duisburg-Dortmund railway , the Zeche Zollverein as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is eponymous. Opened as Zollverein in 1887 , the breakpoint was renamed Essen-Katernberg Süd between 1949 and December 2009 .
history
The stop was opened in 1887 as the Zollverein railway station to connect the Zollverein colliery . At that time, it had sidings to transport coal and later also coke from the Zollverein coking plant . With this mine , the Katernberg colliery settlement , then still called Caternberg , was created north of the railway line . In 1897 the station was renamed Caternberg accordingly . When the Bochum – Essen / Oberhausen railway was built near the Duisburg – Dortmund railway, it received its own stop in Katernberg called Caternberg Nord and the Caternberg station was renamed Caternberg Süd . When the spelling of Katernberg changed, his name was first changed to Katernberg Süd and finally in 1949 when it was incorporated into Essen-Katernberg Süd . In 2009, 60 years later, it was given its current name on the occasion of the Metropolis Ruhr 2010, the cultural capital .
The stop is in an elevated position on a dam and has an island platform. The path via the main access street Schonnebeckhöfe and the platform is not barrier-free. A ramp leads to the street Meybuschhof .
Ruhr 2010
On the occasion of the 2010 Capital of Culture year , Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr and Deutsche Bahn decided to rename the stop in Essen Zollverein Nord to show visitors its proximity to the World Heritage Site. To improve connections and stopping frequencies, Essen Zollverein Nord also stopped the Rhein-Emscher-Express (RE3) during the 2010 timetable . The station was thus approached by two hourly local rail services and by trams and buses. In addition, for better information, a cultural footpath was signposted from the stop to the site of the colliery, which still exists today. On the train, there is a tape announcement about Zollverein World Heritage in English.
Line course
The regional train lines RB 32 and RB 35 currently serve the stop. The Zollverein Nord Bf stop for the cultural line 107 of the Essen tram and some of the Ruhrbahn bus routes is located directly below the stop .

Planning and future changes
Local transport
After the reconstruction of the southern route (Essen Hbf - Bredeney), the cultural line 107 should go directly to Bredeney again. The high-floor vehicles are decommissioned and the culture line 107 (Katernberg - Bredeney) is discontinued. The completion is planned for 2022, the renovation started in 2018. Furthermore, according to the current local transport plan, bus route 170 is to get a tighter cycle due to high demand. Between Borbeck and Kray there should be a 5-minute cycle during rush hour and a 10-minute cycle during off-peak hours. There is a 10-minute rhythm between Kray and Steele during rush hour and every 20 minutes during off-peak hours.
The Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party in Essen calls for a second exit to be added towards the Theobaldstrasse settlement . This is intended to improve access to the settlement and the Zollverein colliery. In addition, this would enable a direct link to bus route 173 (Karlsplatz - Altenessen-Nord - Katernberg-Nord - Theobaldstrasse - Katernberger Markt). But this is currently not included in the local transport plan.
