Construction work on the Elberfeld – Dortmund railway began in 1845. The Wuppertal - Schwelm section was put into operation in October 1847. The difficult terrain delayed further construction. Between Ennepetal and Gevelsberg, a 340 meter long and up to 120 meter wide railway embankment had to be built in the area of today's tunnel , which also crosses the Ennepe next to the tunnel. The necessary areas could only be acquired after expropriations , so that the construction of the dam and the tunnel did not begin until May 1846. The approximately 500,000 m³ of earth came from the cut at the Martfeld house near Schwelm and had to be laboriously brought in by wheelbarrows by thousands of workers .

Since its completion, the tunnel has been crossed by the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn and in the tunnel by the Ennepetalbahn and the L 700. In addition, from 1907 to 1956 there was a single-track connection of the Ennepe tram from Voerde to Haßlinghausen . Later, road and rail traffic in the tunnel were separated by a guardrail . Only one lane was available for traffic in both directions; from 1961 traffic was regulated by traffic lights .

In 1992 the track was also equipped with a road surface, and since then road traffic has been able to use the full traffic area in the tunnel and pass it in two lanes. When trains of the Ennepetalbahn pass the tunnel today, traffic lights are blocked for the duration of the train journey.
