The Royal Prussian Railway Station at Kupferdreh in Essen-Kupferdreh was opened on the Prinz Wilhelm Railway in 1898 .
history
The station building is in the area where the former Ruhrtalbahn branched off , which led from there over the Kupferdreh railway bridge , along the north bank of the Baldeneysee , further along the river and over the Kettwig railway bridge on the lower Ruhrtalbahn to Duisburg-Ruhrort. The Hespertal Railway accompanies the lake near the south bank to Haus Scheppen . The building with today's address Prinz-Friedrich-Platz 1 in Essen-Kupferdreh was put into service on July 27, 1898. In accordance with the need for representation at the time, the decorative design of the two-story brick house was carried out on the long sides by grouping the differently sized windows in different groups and decorating the arched porch entrance with ocher-colored sandstone. Part of the decor has been preserved in the waiting rooms, with the stucco decor in the first class waiting room, which has been renovated as a large dining room for today's gastronomic use.
The front platform, where the historic Hespertalbahn begins its journey today , used to belong to the Ruhrtalbahn, which crossed the Ruhr about 200 meters further south . Before that, the Hespertalbahn or Pörtingsiepenbahn branches off, which runs on the south bank of the Ruhr. The Pörtingsiepen colliery in Essen-Fischlaken was connected via this route . After its closure in 1973, the Association for the Preservation of the Hespertalbahn e. V. the route in 1975 before dismantling.
Since the opening of the new Essen-Kupferdreh train station, which is closer to the town center, in the 1970s, the railway line between Wuppertal-Vohwinkel and Essen-Steele has only been connected to the Hespertalbahn systems via a key switch. The trains on this railway line (especially the S 9 of the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr ) pass the old building without stopping and only serve the new station, which has been downgraded to a stop since 2003.
