The chain forging museum in Fröndenberg / Ruhr was built in the former warehouse of the Himmelmann paper mill. It was built within three years and opened on May 9, 1999. The equipment includes a forge fire from 1910, which was used in the Ruhrland chain factory Wilhelm Prünte . It shows the artisanal production of chains, as it used to be done by chain smiths.

The manufacture of chains had been widespread in the Sauerland in the Brandenburg region since pre-industrial times . In the 19th century, entrepreneurs from Brandenburg founded branches and new companies in neighboring areas, such as today's Unna district and the Sauerland in Cologne. In addition to Fröndenberg, the focus was on the Möhnetal near Sichtigvor and Mülheim, and the Röhrtal near Hachen near Sundern .

The mixture of factory production and home work was typical for this branch of production until well into the 20th century . In the Möhnetal there were a few workers who forged in the factory or at home all year round, as well as numerous small landowners and farmers who did the trade mainly in the bad season.

In the immediate vicinity of the museum, the Fröndenberg funnel , a listed building since 1996, has been preserved, a system that was used to recover raw materials from the wastewater from paper production.
