The pipe works in Schwerte

The Rohrmeisterei Schwerte is a former pumping station for drinking water supply and a current cultural center in Schwerte an der Ruhr . The Rohrmeisterei is the venue for the extra layer and part of the route of industrial culture .

history

After the population of the city of Dortmund and the then independent city of Hörde had multiplied in a short time during the industrialization , bottlenecks arose in the supply of the population and industrial companies with drinking and service water. The Dortmund municipal utilities and the Hörde district waterworks installed drinking water wells in the Ruhr valley near Schwerte. The abundant water there had to be pumped over the Ardeykamm in order to be available to the Dortmund population.

After the first waterworks had been built in Villigst , the Hörde waterworks acquired a plot of land in Schwerte in 1889. The pumping station was commissioned here as early as 1890. The pumping station received two open water basins and the drinking water was obtained by horizontal gravel filtration. From 1908 a third pumping station started operating in Hengsen .

The Schwerte pumping station was shut down again as early as 1924 due to a lack of profitability. The machines were removed and the hall was given a new use by the Dortmund municipal utility .

In 1976, the Dortmund public utilities gave up its use. The city of Schwerte rented the building and it was used for the “Schwerter Frühling” trade exhibition and as a workshop and storage building for local youth work.

In 1990 the city of Schwerte bought the pipe works to build a community and cultural center.

The building erected in the first phase of construction in 1890 was a seven-bay hall. In 1896 the hall was extended by three more yokes. The hall now has a footprint of 70.24 meters in length and 24.32 meters in width with a maximum height of 11.45 meters.

The building is constructed as a red brick structure. The brick arches, the cast-iron lattice windows and the barrel roof with steel framework have been under monument protection since September 19, 1990.

Todays use

Today the pipe works is used as a culture and community center. In order to secure the building permanently, the community foundation Rohrmeisterei Schwerte was founded, which has set itself the task of operating the building as a cultural center without public subsidies.

The Rohrmeisterei is the venue for the extra shift and reading place for the Mord am Hellweg literature festival .

The Schwerter Senfmühle , one of the last German mustard mills, also has its production facility in the Rohrmeisterei.
