Barry Charles Cryer OBE (born March 23, 1935 in Leeds , Yorkshire , England ) is a British writer and comedian . He founded the Windmill Theater in London , a club where comedy sketches were shown in between nude and living picture shows.

Cryer has written for Jack Benny , George Burns , Tommy Cooper , Kenny Everett , David Frost , Bob Hope and Richard Pryor , among others .

Cryer also wrote episodes for the Doctor in the House television series .

Career

1958 Cryer had a number-one hit in Finland with the song The Purple People Eater by Sheb Wooley . Due to contractual reasons, Wooley's song had never been released in Scandinavia and so it became Cryer's song. The song stayed number one for three weeks.

In the 1970s, Cryer appeared with Tim Brooke-Taylor and John Junkin on the BBC radio series Hello, Cheeky! which basically consisted of three actors joking about each other. He also appeared in the television comedy series The Steam Video Company . He also hosted the ITV comedy game show Joker's Wild and had a role in All You Need Is Cash , a ridiculous documentary about the Rutles band who parodied the Beatles .

He toured with Willie Rushton on Two Old Farts in the Night , which also appeared on video, and with That Reminds Me after Rushton's death. He is also famous for his after-dinner speeches.

After a brief stint as host in the first season, Cryer was a player on the BBC radio show I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue , which has aired since 1972 . He also writes and plays in You'll Have Had Your Tea with Graeme Garden .

He has written an autobiography called That Reminds Me and a book of various anecdotes, Pigs Can Fly .

In 2001 he was awarded the OBE .

In 2005 he was on tour with Barry Cryer: The First Farewell Tour (Eng . : The First Farewell Tour ).
