Barry Stewart (born February 4, 1988 in Shelbyville , Tennessee ) is an American basketball player . After studying in his home country as a professional, Stewart first played three seasons in the German basketball league for the two clubs TBB Trier and LTi Gießen 46ers and three seasons in the Belgian Ethias League for the two clubs Antwerp Giants and Limburg United. Stewart has been playing in Germany again for the Walter Tigers Tübingen since the 2016/17 basketball Bundesliga .

Career

In 2006 Stewart moved from his home in Tennessee to study at Mississippi State University in the southern neighboring state, where he played for the college team Bulldogs in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) of the NCAA . After a second round defeat against the eventual finalist University of Memphis Tigers in the national finals of the NCAA 2008 they won the SEC championship tournament a year later in 2009, but this time lost in the first round at the NCAA championship final tournament. In 2010 the defending champion moved back into the SEC final, which was lost after extra time against the Wildcats of the University of Kentucky for the later “top draft pick” John Wall . However, they had not received an invitation to the national finals of the NCAA and was then only the host of a preliminary round of the National Invitation Tournament .

After completing his studies, Stewart did not get a lucrative professional contract in his home country and therefore began his professional career in the German basketball league with the TBB from Trier . Under the new head coach Henrik Rödl , the team was completely rebuilt and rejuvenated. Quite surprisingly, at the end of the basketball Bundesliga 2010/11, they only just missed out on the play-offs for the championship. For the subsequent basketball Bundesliga 2011/12 Stewart moved to league competitor Giessen 46ers, who ended the season as penultimate in a relegation zone. While Gießen was only able to secure relegation by purchasing a “ wild card ”, Stewart returned to Trier for the subsequent basketball league in 2012/13 . But the Trier again missed the entry into the play-offs and Stewart left the club again after only one season.

In the 2013/14 season Stewart played in the Belgian Ethias League for the Giants from Antwerp , with whom he reached the second group stage of the 16 best teams in the European club competition EuroChallenge 2013/14 . Despite a home win against Tartu Rock , who are otherwise unbeaten in the group , they were eliminated after two defeats against Russian rivals Krasnye Krylja Samara . In the national league it was enough with a practically balanced season balance only to the sixth main round and last play-off place, but in the quarter-final series for the championship they surprisingly defeated the former series champion Spirou BC Charleroi . In the semi-final series they stayed against defending champion Telenet Oostende without a win. For the following season Stewart moved to the newcomer Limburg United from Hasselt , who had joined the closed professional league as the eleventh club. The team reached in their first season as well as in the following season in fourth place in the play-offs for the championship. After losing to Spirou Charleroi in the quarter-finals at the play-off premiere in 2015, the team reached the semifinals in 2016 after a success over Stewart's former Antwerp team, in which they were only just after two wins in five games against the defending champions from Ostend failed.

Stewart returned to Germany for the 2016/17 basketball Bundesliga and, like his teammate Stanton Kidd, was signed by the Walter Tigers from Tübingen , for whom his former Limburg teammate Jesse Sanders had previously played.
