The Basketball Bundesliga season 2016/17 (officially easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga ) was the 51st season of the top German division in men's basketball . The regular season started on September 23, 2016 and ended on May 1, 2017 with the 34th and final matchday. The play-off final round of the best eight teams for the German championship, played in the best-of-five mode, lasted until June 11, 2017.
Changes to the preseason
- As a result of the changes in the European competition calendar, where the Euroleague 2016/17 was expanded into a full round- robin tournament of 16 teams and the 2016/17 Basketball Champions League was newly introduced, the start of the season was brought forward by a week into September and the event of the BBL Champions Cups waived.
- After the sponsorship contract with the league's previous name sponsor had expired, BBL GmbH presented a new and better-funded sponsorship contract with Teambank AG and its easyCredit brand for five years. A blogger , not entirely unknown in the scene , preceded the official presentation with a previously reported DNS query.
- For the third time in a row, both athletic climbers from the second-highest division ProA received a license for the first Bundesliga, so that Science City Jena , most recently in the BBL 2007/08 , and SC Rasta Vechta , most recently in the BBL 2013/14 , two Clubs returned to the top division that had exactly one season of experience in the BBL in their history. Both had “paid the hard way” in their first season at that time and had come in last in the table.
- After there was no withdrawal and no license revocation of an existing first division member club and therefore no wild cards were given, the two worst-placed teams had to relegate to the ProA 2016/17 again . In addition to the Central German BC after four years of uninterrupted membership, this time the Crailsheim Merlins also had to relegate, who were bottom twice in a row.
- The two Franconian clubs Brose Baskets and s.Oliver Baskets changed their company name and deleted the basket from their name in favor of a local reference, so that from this season they started as Brose Bamberg and s.Oliver Würzburg .
- After all Bundesliga games have been presented live and on-demand by Telekom Basketball on a streaming portal for two years now, the previously rather irregular live broadcast on free TV is to be broadcast on Friday evening at 7 p.m. on Sport1 be strengthened again. This slot tends to compete with the Euroleague, whose games are played on Thursday and Friday evenings.
International competitions
In the course of the past season and during the summer break, the dispute escalated between such clubs in the Euroleague, which are the owners of the operating company of the Euroleague in Euroleague Commercial Assets SA , and the continental umbrella organization FIBA Europe of the national European associations, largely supported by in the Switzerland-based world association FIBA , which tried to enforce its new competition calendar. After the license agreement for the Euroleague was terminated by its operating company, FIBA Europa initiated a new basketball champions league club competition, with the help of the Bundesliga operating organization BBL GmbH, among others, to displace the EuroCup, which is now viewed as a "wild league", through various sanctions tried. Unlike other national European associations, the DBB tolerated the participation of the first division in all European competitions. After reducing the number of participants in the Euroleague, in which only one German team took part with the German champions for the first time in five years, and in the Eurocup, German teams take part in European competitions as follows:
Another result of the dispute was that the Intercontinental Cup last played between the winner of the FIBA Liga de las Américas and the Euroleague was now played between the winners of the recognized FIBA competitions. As the title winners of the FIBA Europe Cup 2015/16 , the Fraport Skyliners were the first German club team to take part in the competition, which has been held sporadically in different modes for 50 years.
