The Sparkassen-Arena is a multi-purpose hall in the university town of Göttingen in Lower Saxony . It is mainly used by the basketball club BG Göttingen as a venue and by the students of the adjoining Otto Hahn Gymnasium for school sports. For basketball games, it offers 3447 spectators, of which 2078 are seats.

history

The hall, which opened in 2011, is the successor to the former Godehard hall after the decision was made against a fundamental renovation of the old hall and a new building. It was also on Schützenplatz . The design of the sports facility comes from Goldbeck West GmbH.

Before the start of construction, a bomb from the Second World War was discovered on the site , which had to be removed. When attempting to defuse this bomb, it exploded on June 1, 2010, killing three employees of the Lower Saxony ordnance disposal service . In memory of these employees, a plaque was put up in the foyer of the arena.

The hall was built according to the passive house standard PHPP , i. This means that the hall has a very low primary energy requirement. In addition, good insulation and insulation will recover heat. The Sparkassen-Arena was one of the first halls in Germany to meet this standard.

Other Events

As in the Godehard Hall, the indoor soccer tournament for the mayor's cup will also be held in the Sparkassen-Arena. The organizers of this tournament are the two soccer clubs SVG Göttingen and FC Grone .
