Asian basketball championship
The men's basketball Asian championship (officially: FIBA Asia Cup ) has been the continental basketball championship for Asia and Oceania since 2017 and is organized by the world association FIBA . From 1960 to 2015 the championship was only held for Asian teams every two years and was also the Asian qualifying tournament for the Basketball World Cup or the Summer Olympics .
As of 2017, the previous Asian and Oceania championships were combined. The tournament, now held every four years, is no longer a qualifying tournament for the World Cup or the Summer Olympics.
Until 1975, the selection of the Philippines dominated the competition. In that year, however, the Philippine Basketball Association was founded, which made the best Filipino players professionals and thus no longer allowed to play in the Asian Cup (this restriction was only lifted in 1989). In addition, the team from the People's Republic of China had joined FIBA the year before and has won 16 of the 21 events since then, although China, which was already qualified to host the Olympic Games in 2007, only sent a B-team. At this event, Iran was the first team from the Middle East to win the competition.
