Baynard's Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Baynard's Castle was a fortress in London , which over time to a palace was rebuilt. King Wilhelm I had it built after the Norman invasion in 1066 to protect the city from attacks by the Vikings and to prevent possible uprisings by the city's residents. The building was on the city wall on the banks of the Thames , near the mouth of the River Fleet and what is now Blackfriars station .

In 1666 the building was completely destroyed in the Great Fire of London . It is featured on many ancient views of the city and the name has been carried over to a street called Castle Baynard Street. Part of William Shakespeare's drama Richard III. takes place in Baynard's Castle.
