Rebecca "Becky" Elizabeth Sauerbrunn (born June 6, 1985 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is an American soccer player . The defender will play for Portland Thorns FC from the 2020 season and for the US national team since 2008 . With this she won the world title in 2015 and 2019.
Athletic career
She started playing soccer at Ladue High School . In addition to soccer, she also played basketball and volleyball and was “Conference Player of the Year” in both sports. She also played for the Virginia Cavaliers and JB Marine with whom she won the State Cup four times and the 2000 regional championship. She received multiple awards and nominations for all-star teams. In 2005 she played for the Boston Renegades , from 2006 to 2007 for the Richmond Kickers and in 2008 for Washington Freedom in the W-League . In 2009 she scored the first goal for Washington Freedom in the new Women's Professional Soccer League.
In 1999 she took part in a training camp for U-14 players for the first time and subsequently went through all youth teams. In 2004 she was a co-captain of the team that finished third in the 2004 Women's U-19 World Cup in Thailand. It was used in all games over the entire period. In 2007 and 2008 she won the Nordic Cup with the U-21 and U-23 teams , and in 2008 as co-captain.
Sauerbrunn was appointed to the US national team for the first time in early 2008 by the new coach Pia Sundhage and Sauerbrunn made her debut against Canada on January 16, 2008 at the annual four-nation tournament in China . After another game at the four-nation tournament, she had to wait until 2010 before she was called up to replace an injured player in the 2010 CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup and came on in the 9-0 win against Guatemala . In 2011 it was used in seven out of ten games. a. at the four-nation tournament and in the final of the Algarve Cup . She was also named to the squad for the 2011 World Cup . Sauerbrunn was used for the first time in the semifinals for the red-banned Rachel Buehler and after the 3-1 win against France reached the final, in which she was not used.
In 2012 she took part in the Olympic football tournament for the first time with the US team . In the first two games it was not used. In the last group game against North Korea , in the semifinals against Canada and in the final against Japan she was substituted on. With the team she won the gold medal for the first time.
In the 2013 season she played in the newly founded National Women's Soccer League , the highest American professional league in women's football for FC Kansas City .
Sauerbrunn was also appointed to the US squad for the 2015 World Cup . She was used in all seven games and did not miss a minute. She became world champion for the first time by beating Japan in the final. She was the only player in the squad who was still without a goal after the World Cup games.
On February 21, 2016, she played her 100th international match against Canada in the final of the qualifying tournament for the 2016 Summer Olympics .
At the Olympic Games , she and her team failed already in the quarter-finals with a penalty shoot-out against the Swedes trained by their former national coach Pia Sundhage , so that the USA did not reach the final for the first time.
Things didn't go optimally in the league either: after two seasons in which Kansas were champions, they only finished sixth in 2016 after the league round and thus missed the playoffs. Sauerbrunn was chosen as three times before in the NWSL Best XI, because their team conceded the second fewest goals. However, their team also scored the second fewest goals. For the 2018 season she moved to Utah Royals FC and became its captain and MVP of the team.
In 2018 she won the Tournament of Nations and the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup with the national team , through which the US team qualified for the 2019 World Cup. On SheBelieves Cup in 2018 they could not attend because of a foot injury.
In the first game of the year on January 10, 2019, which was lost 3-1 to France 3-1, she made her 150th international match. On May 1st, she was nominated for the 2019 World Cup . At the World Cup she was only not used in the first group game and World Cup record win against Thailand . Then she didn't miss a minute and formed the central defense with Abby Dahlkemper in the successful defense of the title.
For the 2020 season she moved to Portland Thorns FC .
She is the only outfield player in the USA who has not scored a goal with at least 100 international matches . However, Kate Markgraf scored her only international goal in her 193rd international match.
