The Beluga II is a two-masted clipper with a white hull and white sails of the environmental organization Greenpeace with home port Hamburg .

History and commitment

At the beginning of 2003, Greenpeace Germany commissioned the Fridtjof-Nansen shipyard in Wolgast , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , on the west bank of the Peenestrom to build a new ship of the Klipper type. It was the first new building commissioned by Greenpeace.

Put into service in August 2004 triggered the Beluga II its predecessor, the 2004 decommissioned Beluga decreases. Both ships are named after the beluga , a white green whale that sporadically immigrates into rivers.

The ship can be used universally and can sail on all European inland waters , as well as off the coasts of the North and Baltic Seas , the Atlantic , the Mediterranean , the Caspian and the Black Sea .

The Beluga II with the barge after the confiscation

On July 7, 2017, the Beluga II was used in the protests surrounding the G20 summit 2017 in Hamburg : while the invited state guests were gathering in the Elbphilharmonie for a concert, the clipper was carrying a barge with a large paper mache figure of Donald Trump on the Elbe past the border of the marine safety zone. The figure shows Trump as a baby with a diaper from which crude oil oozes, sitting on the globe. With his head blushed and his mouth wide open in scream, he holds the halves of a torn climate protection agreement in both hands . Greenpeace small boats headed for the border of the security zone and let swimmers into the water, who swam towards the concert hall. The Beluga II including the barge, the small boats and all the people involved were confiscated or arrested for “dangerous interference in shipping traffic” and taken to the Water Police Commissioner 3 on the Süderelbe in Hamburg-Harburg .

Construction and technical data

The ship is 34.00 meters long, 5.60 meters wide and has a draft of 1.90 meters. It has a displacement of 135 tons and with its 173 kW engine can reach a maximum speed of 8.5 knots; the fuel consumption is around 20 liters per hour.

The electrical energy supply is ensured by a hydraulically operated power generator with 10 kVA output. The device is driven directly by the ship's hydraulics.

The bridge clearance height of the empty ship with a standing mast is 27.40 meters. However, since the two masts, which are just over 25 meters high, can be folded down with the help of an ankle joint, the minimum bridge clearance height is 3.95 meters.

The full sail area of the rigging is approximately 320 square meters. The crew consists of 3–4 people.
