Career

society

Ben Godfrey's father, Alex, was a professional rugby league player. However, he himself began playing football at a young age in his hometown near York City . In the summer of 2011 he joined the youth division of Middlesbrough FC , but returned to the Minstermen a year later . For the first time in the matchday squad in the first team, he was on October 11, 2014 in the 1: 3 away defeat in Football League Two against AFC Newport County , but was not taken into account. In the end, he had to wait almost a year for his debut until he was on the pitch in the 1-0 home win against Yeovil Town on August 18, 2015 (3rd matchday). As a result, he already penetrated the rotation and always played in the position of defensive midfielder . In the 2-1 home defeat to Plymouth Argyle , he scored his first competitive goal for York City in the ninth minute of stoppage time. With his team he experienced a difficult season in the relegation ranks, as they could only win four in 25 games by the turn of the year. By January 2016, Godfrey was used in 12 games in which he was able to score a goal.

Godfrey escaped the relegation battle of York City on January 15, 2016 with his move to the Premier League club Norwich City , where he signed a 3-1 / 2-year contract. There he first played for the academy team, but was also used for the reserve in Premier League 2. He did not make his debut in the first team in the remainder of the 2015/16 season and was not listed once in a matchday squad. The Canaries had to start relegation to the second-rate EFL Championship with 19th place in the table . On August 23, 2016, he made his debut in the first team in a 6-1 home win against Coventry City in the League Cup and scored his first goal for Norwich in that game. In the league, he played his first game on January 28, 2017 (28th matchday) in a 2-0 home win against Birmingham City . In the remainder of the 2016/17 season he came on another league assignment and played mainly in cup competitions and in reserve.

On August 24, 2017, he moved to third division Shrewsbury Town in a six-month loan deal . There he was planned as a regular player from the start and the loan was extended from the end of 2017 to the end of the 2017/18 season . On December 30, 2017, he scored his only goal of the season in a 2-1 away win against Southend United . He came to 40 appearances in the league this season and then returned to Norwich.

In the following season 2018/19 he was initially only a substitute and only made it into the starting line-up of coach Daniel Farke in December 2018 . However, he was no longer in defensive midfield, but was moved to central defense by Farke . On December 29, he met in the 3-4 home loss to Derby County for the first time in the championship for the Canaries . He kept his place in the starting XI the entire season and had a very strong season with his club, which was rewarded with the championship title and the resulting promotion to the Premier League . Godfrey came to 31 league appearances in which he scored four goals and prepared two.

National team

Godfrey was first nominated for the England U-20 national team in March 2019 . He made his debut on March 21, when he lost 3-1 in a friendly international match against Poland .

He has been the England U-21 international since September 2019 .
