Todd Owen Cantwell (born February 27, 1998 in Dereham ) is an English football player who is currently under contract with the Premier League promoted Norwich City . The midfielder has been England's U-21 international since September 2019 .

Career

At the age of 10, Todd Cantwell joined the Norwich City Youth Department . Due to his impressive performance in the reserve team, he was nominated for the award for the best player of the 2016/17 season in the Premier League 2, but ultimately did not win it. In October 2017, he was listed in the first team's matchday squad for the first time, but was not used for the time being. He then made his debut in the jersey of the Canaries on January 17, 2018 in the FA Cup defeat against Chelsea .

In order to gain match practice, he was loaned to the Dutch second division club Fortuna Sittard on January 28th . He made his debut on February 2 (23rd matchday) when he started in the 2-0 away defeat against FC Volendam . Just three weeks later, he scored his first goal in a 1-1 draw at NEC Nijmegen . He scored two goals in ten appearances in the 2017/18 season and prepared three more.

After returning to Norwich City, he made it into the rotation of coach Daniel Farke's team in the 2018/19 season . On September 19 (8th matchday) he played his first game in the second-rate EFL Championship in a 2-1 away win against Reading FC . On December 1, 2018, he met for the first time in the professional field for the Canaries in the 3-1 home win against Rotherham United . With his club he experienced a very strong season, which was rewarded with the championship title and the resulting promotion to the Premier League . Cantwell came to 24 league appearances in which he scored one goal and prepared two.

In the following 2019/20 season , Daniel Farke gave Cantwell his confidence and used him as a starter on the left wing at the start of the league . In the 3-1 home win against Newcastle United on August 17 (2nd matchday), he prepared two goals for Teemu Pukkis . A week later, he met in the 3-2 home defeat against Chelsea for the first time in the top English division.

National team

Between July 28 and August 2, 2014 Todd Cantwell played four friendly internationals for the England U-17 national team , in which he was able to score.

Cantwell has been England's U-21 international since September 2019 .
