The Bentinkshof district is located in the city center of Emden within the Emder Wall . It is statistically not run by the city of Emden as an independent district, but is one of the six districts of the city center with a total of 8,677 inhabitants. In contrast to other parts of the city center, many old buildings, especially from the late 19th and early 20th centuries , survived the bombing of Emden during World War II .

location

The northern and eastern borders of the district are formed by the Emden city moat as part of the city's early modern fortress. To the west the district is bounded by the Hinter Tief , to the south by the Alten Graben . To the north of Bentinkshof is the Barenburg district , to the east of Wolthusen , to the south of Groß-Faldern and to the west of Boltentor .

According to an older survey, presented in the transport development plan of the city of Emden, Bentinkshof had 933 inhabitants at the end of the 1990s.

traffic

Neutorstrasse, as part of the most important north-south connection in Emden, is one of the most heavily loaded streets in the city center with 14,000 to almost 16,000 vehicles per day. The Philosophenweg is also heavily used as a bypass of the inner city; at the beginning of the 2000s, there were around 7000 cars on average every day. On average, more than 7000 vehicles traveled on the road between the two Bleichen a day, which is one of the “gateways” into Emden city center from the east.

Companies and Institutions

The local office of the Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse is located in the district, on the street Zwischen Zwei Bleichen, and is housed in a brick Expressionist building from the 1920s. Neutorstrasse is one of the main shopping streets in Emden, and accordingly there are many retailers and a few restaurants there. In addition, there are a large number of medical practices in the quarter, more often in villas and other single houses, but also in the eight-story so-called medical tower on Neutorstrasse. There is also a larger dance school in Bentinkshof.

The seat of the Sprengel Ostfriesland-Ems can also be found in Bentinkshof.

Attractions

De Vrouw Johanna mill is located in this district. Directly next to the mill is a so-called paddle-and-pedal station , where visitors can choose to borrow bicycles or canoes in order to get to a neighboring station, where the means of transport are returned. The paddle-and-pedal station is only a few meters from the mill on the Emden city moat, which is part of the extensive East Frisian waterway network. A building of clinker expressionism is the former Apollo cinema , in which a cultural center is to be built.

Sports

In the Bentinkshof district are the hall and the sports grounds of the Emden gymnastics club, which was founded in 1869 and is the oldest sports club in town. The hall and the adjacent square are named after the Emden shipowner family Brons ( AG Ems ), who played a key role in the association. The ETV received the area under the stipulation that it would continue to be used for club purposes and not be sold, which is why the large open space of Bronsplatz is still located in the inner-city Bentinkshof district, amid mostly older houses. There the outdoor athletes of the ETV will find their training opportunities. Shortly after its founding in 1946, Kickers Emden also played on Bronsplatz, until he moved to the sports field of the Emden Verein Freie Turnerschaft 03 and finally moved into his own sports grounds in 1950 . Among other things, Kickers emerged from the ETV football department founded in 1928.

The Emden Stadtgraben is also home to the boat harbors of the Emden water sports club and the Emden sailing club.
