Bernd Stange (born March 14, 1948 in Gnaschwitz , district of Bautzen ) is a German football coach .

Life

As a football player he was active for Chemie Gnaschwitz in the amateur field of the GDR until 1965. A year later, Stange played at Vorwärts Bautzen before moving to SC DHfK Leipzig , where he ended his playing career in 1970. Bernd Stange graduated from the DHfK as a certified sports teacher.

In 1970 he became a member of the coaching staff of FC Carl Zeiss Jena ; initially as a youth coach, from 1971 as assistant coach to Hans Meyer . In 1978 he moved to the GDR Football Association , where he initially looked after various youth teams. Later he was assistant coach of the GDR national team and was entrusted with the management of the GDR team at the end of October 1981 after missing the World Cup qualification for the soccer World Cup in Spain after the dismissal of national coach Georg Buschner . However, Stange initially only supervised the selection in one international match as acting national coach, in the last meaningless World Cup qualifier the GDR won 5-1 against Malta on November 11, 1981 in Jena. Shortly after the turn of the year, however, the DFV initially appointed Rudolf Krause as the new selection coach. Stange was appointed trainer responsible for the GDR Olympic team. With this he was able to qualify for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , but was not allowed to participate in the games because of the Olympic boycott of the socialist states. In addition, from September 1983 Stange acted in a double function. Since national trainer Rudolf Krause was released from his duties because he missed the European championship qualification , the DFV entrusted the head association trainer Dieter Fuchs, together with Bernd Stange and Harald Irmscher, with the management of the GDR national team. In fact, Stange was already perceived as the national coach, which is also expressed in match reports at the time. Officially, however, he was only appointed GDR national coach by the DFV in the summer of 1984. As a result, with the GDR selection, Stange only narrowly missed the 1986 World Cup in Mexico and the 1988 European Championship in the Federal Republic of Germany, in the European Championship qualification for 1988 even the reigning European champion France was left behind. After the first two games in the qualifying group for the 1990 World Cup in Italy , the DFV's patience came to an end. After a bloodless appearance against Iceland, in which Andreas Thom only made clear fronts in the 89th minute with the 2-0 win, the DFV team lost 3-1 to Turkey on November 30, 1988 in Istanbul. The media coverage was devastating and the well-known sports commentator Heinz-Florian Oertel wrote in his column in the Berliner Zeitung about misjudgment of the opponent and overestimation of themselves by players and coaches. He also raised the question of why the coaches could not publicly acknowledge mistakes and errors. At a meeting of the DFV Presidium on December 8, 1988, Stange and Irmscher were released from overseeing the GDR selection. The responsible association officials had strong doubts about reaching the World Cup finals with the performances shown. Stange's time as national coach of the GDR ended, in which he and his team were able to achieve 24 victories in 53 games.

Stange was an unofficial employee of the GDR State Security Service and spied on, among others, Jörg Berger , who only announced this in 2005. The reports from Stange put an end to Hans Richter's national team career in the GDR.

From 1989 to 1991 Stange was the coach of FC Carl Zeiss Jena, then moved to the Bundesliga and was coach of Hertha BSC from July 1, 1991 to August 18, 1992 . In 1993/94 he coached VfB Leipzig in its only Bundesliga season, but was released early on February 21, 1994. In the 1994/95 season, Stange was sports director at Hertha BSC. Stange gave up this office in the spring of 1995.

Now Stange continued his coaching career abroad - via Ukraine ( Dnipro Dnipropetrowsk , 1995/96; CSKA Kiev , 1996), Australia ( Perth Glory , 1998-2001) and Oman (coach of the national team in 2001) it finally took him to the Iraq .

From November 10, 2002 to July 5, 2004 he was the coach of the Iraqi national soccer team . The treaty, which he had signed at the time of Saddam Hussein , was commented extremely critically in parts. Despite the extremely unstable political situation ( Iraq War 2003), his team qualified for the 2004 Summer Olympics . Due to the tense security situation in the country, he resigned from his position in July 2004. The Iraqi national team finished fourth at the Olympic Games in August 2004.

On January 18, 2005, Bernd Stange took over the first division club Apollon Limassol in Cyprus . From the penultimate place in the table he made it to seventh place in the table thanks to a surprising second half of the season with just one defeat. In the 2005/06 season Limassol then managed the feat of not losing any of the 26 season games and becoming undefeated champions. Apollon Limassol also won the Cypriot Supercup.

On January 5, 2007, Stange resigned from his post as his then assistant coach Harald Irmscher was fired for financial reasons. Since July 30, 2007, Stange was the national coach of Belarus , again with Irmscher as his assistant. After he rejected the offer to extend his contract, his contract in Belarus finally expired at the end of 2011. In May 2013, Stange was introduced as the new coach of the Singapore national team. In April 2016, Stange resigned from his position and announced a break.

In January 2018, the Syrian Football Association announced that Bernd Stange will be the new coach of the Syrian national team from February 2018 . On January 10, 2019, Stange was dismissed from the first two group games of the Asian Cup after just one point .

In addition to his work as a soccer coach, Bernd Stange is the club chairman of Action-Base eV
