Bernhard Worms (* 14. March 1930 in Stommeln , today Pulheim ) is a German politician of the CDU .

education and profession

After graduating from high school and doing an apprenticeship as an iron and steel merchant, he studied business administration at the University of Cologne . In 1957 he finished his studies with a degree in business administration . His doctorate as Dr. rer. pole. took place with a work submitted to the University of Graz in 1959 : The creeping inflation. The problem of secular inflation . In 1960 he entered the civil service career at the Deutsche Bundespost . In 1969 he was appointed Chief Post Councilor in the Federal Ministry for Post and Telecommunications . 1978 to 1982 he was department president at the Oberpostdirektion Düsseldorf .

Bernhard Worms is a member of the Association of Catholic Entrepreneurs (BKU) , chairman of the Karl Arnold Foundation , board member of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and a member of the board of trustees of the Opus Dei residence campus Müngersdorf and the Heinz Kühn Foundation .

Bernhard Worms has been married to Hildegard Worms since September 23, 1963 and is the father of three children. Hildegard Worms worked as a teacher for 20 years after graduating from the German Sport University .

Political party

Worms joined the CDU in 1949. At the age of 22, in 1952, he was elected to the board of the Sinnersdorf community association of the CDU. In 1956 he became chairman of the Pulheim District Association of the CDU. Bernhard Worms was CDU chairman of the Cologne-Land district association from 1965 until its dissolution in 1975. From 1975 to 1981 he was then chairman of the CDU of the Erftkreis . From 1980 to 1985 he led the CDU Rhineland as state chairman. Since 2001 he has been President of the European Seniors Union and Honorary Chairman of the Seniors Union . Bernhard Worms is on the board of the European People's Party and the CDU.

Political offices

As a member of the CDU, he became a member of the Pulheim office in 1952 . Furthermore, Bernhard Worms became a member of the Pulheim municipal council and the district council of the Cologne district . In 1965 he became a government councilor in the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia and until 1966 he was personal advisor to Prime Minister Franz Meyers . From 1970 to 1990 he was a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia . Furthermore, Bernhard Worms was the first honorary district administrator in the Rhein-Erft district from 1975 to 1983 . From 1983 to 1990 he was parliamentary group leader of the CDU parliamentary group in the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia. In 1985 he was defeated as a top candidate for the office of Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia against Johannes Rau . In 1990 Bernhard Worms was elected to the German Bundestag . However, he resigned from this office after a few weeks, as Norbert Blüm appointed him permanent state secretary in the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs in 1991 . He held this office until 1995.

Bernhard Worms is a member of 34 associations. For many years from 1981 he was a member of the board of directors of 1. FC Köln and from 1991 vice-president of the Cologne soccer club. He has been a member of the Lions club since 1987 . He is also an avid hiker. His other hobbies include jogging and gardening.
