Berthold Leibinger (born November 26, 1930 in Stuttgart ; † October 16, 2018 there ) was a partner in Trumpf GmbH + Co. KG and a patron .

Life

Berthold Leibinger was the son of the art dealer for East Asian antiques, Anton Leibinger. In 1950 he graduated from the Ulrich von Hutten grammar school in Korntal ( Ludwigsburg district ) and then began an apprenticeship as a mechanic at Trumpf & Co., a company that manufactures machine tools . Leibinger then studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Stuttgart . After completing his diploma thesis at Trumpf, he started there as a design engineer. From 1958 Leibinger worked as a development engineer at Cincinnati Milling Machines in Cincinnati (USA). After returning to the Trumpf company in 1961, he took over the management of the design department and in 1967 developed the first punching and nibbling machine with numerical control. The childless company owner Christian Trumpf, his godmother's husband, appointed him as his successor. Leibinger gradually acquired shares in the company and became a partner in the company in 1963 and technical director from 1966. From 1978 to 2005 he was Chairman of the Management Board.

On November 18, 2005, Berthold Leibinger handed over the chairmanship of the management of Trumpf to his daughter Nicola Leibinger-Kammüller . His other two children are Regine Leibinger and Peter Leibinger . Until 2012 he was chairman of the supervisory bodies of the Trumpf Group. In the spring of 2014 Leibinger was at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management of the Technical University of Vienna Dr. technicae doctorate. He passed away on October 16, 2018 after a long illness.

Public functions

From 1999 to 2003, Berthold Leibinger was chairman of the supervisory board of BASF AG and a member of the supervisory board of BMW AG, Deutsche Bank AG and Deutsche Bundespost Telekom.

From 1985 to 1990 he was President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) Region Stuttgart, from 1989 to 1992 President of the Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbauer e. V. (VDMA) and from 1990 to 2008 deputy chairman of the Verein Deutscher Werkzeugmaschinenfabriken e. V. (VDW). Berthold Leibinger was an advisor to the state government of Baden-Württemberg , from 1994 to 2001 as Chairman of the Innovation Advisory Board and from 2002 to 2005 as Chairman of the Innovation Forum.

From 2001 to 2017 Leibinger was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Allensbach Demoskopie Foundation .

From 1995 to 1998 he was a member of the Chancellor's Council for Research, Technology and Innovation. From 2003 to 2009 he was Chairman of the University Council of the University of Stuttgart. Leibinger was a member of the Senate Committee of the German Academy of Science and Engineering, acatech , from 2008 to 2011 .

Berthold Leibinger was a member of the Working Group of Evangelical Entrepreneurs (AEU) and was a member of its board of trustees from 2000 to 2012. In 2003 he appeared as a speaker at the Christian Leadership Congress .

Cultural and social engagement

Berthold Leibinger was chairman of the Friends of the Schiller National Museum and the German Literature Archive e. V. as well as member of the advisory board of the Vereinigung gegen Vergessen - For Democracy .

Berthold Leibinger Foundation

The Berthold Leibinger Foundation was established in 1992 as a non-profit foundation and uses its proceeds for cultural, scientific, ecclesiastical and charitable purposes. It has been awarding the Berthold Leibinger Innovation Prize for applied laser technology since 2000 . Since 2006, the foundation has also been awarding the Berthold Leibinger Future Prize for laser technology and, since 2015, the comic book prize endowed with 15,000 euros . The foundation holds an indirect 5% stake in Trumpf GmbH + Co. KG.
