Bess Meredyth

Bess Meredyth (born February 12, 1890 in Buffalo , New York , † July 13, 1969 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American screenwriter and film actress . She was one of the 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .

Life

Bess Meredyth began her career as a screenwriter in Hollywood in 1915 , at that time one of the few domains in which men and women were equally active alongside the profession of film editor . She wrote a number of screenplays for MGM in the 1920s . In the following years she rose to one of the highest paid authors in the industry alongside Frances Marion . Some of her best-known film scripts began in 1934 when she was hired by Darryl F. Zanuck for his newly founded production company 20th Century Pictures . For her work on A Shameless Woman and Wonder of Women , she was nominated for an Oscar in 1930 for best screenplay.

Her only child, the later screenwriter John Meredyth Lucas, was born from her marriage to the actor Wilfred Lucas (1917–1927) . In her third marriage, she was married to Michael Curtiz from 1929 to 1962 .
