Betondorp ( German  Betondorf ) is a district in the Amsterdam-Oost district ( province of North Holland ) and was built as an experiment in public housing in the early 1920s. In January 2017, the quarter had 3,230 inhabitants.

history

After the First World War there was a great housing shortage in Amsterdam . Building materials were expensive and there were hardly any experienced builders. This is how the idea of building concrete apartments arose at that time . In the Tuindorp Watergraafsmeer district, to which Betondorp belonged, some of the apartments were built from bricks and the other part from concrete. Ten architects designed 900 community apartments. The first of these were available at the end of 1923. The " village " is laid out in a star shape with the De Brink square as the center . The buildings around the square are under monument protection ( Rijksmonument ). At the beginning of the 1970s, 522 apartments were thoroughly renovated for 10 million guilders . The street names of the district symbolize the rural (village) character, such as the “Graanstraat” (German Getreidestraße ), “Oogststraat” ( Erntestraße ), “Landbouwstraat” ( agricultural street) or “Veeteeltstraat” ( cattle breeding street ).

In the beginning not everyone could live in Betondorp . The municipality rented the apartments primarily to civil servants and workers with vocational training. There were no churches and no restaurants there.

The Park de Meer neighborhood , which was built in 1999, belongs to Betondorp . In January 2011 it had around 2000 inhabitants, 30% of whom were foreign citizens. In the district there are several sports fields, the Nieuw Oosterbegraafplaats and De nieuwe Ooster cemeteries , a community center for the residents, a library and a primary school.

Famous Dutch personalities who were born or raised in Betondorp include: Johan Cruyff , Ed van der Elsken , Bobby Haarms, Gerard van het Reve , Willeke van Ammelrooy and Leo van Wijk.
