A Rijksmonument ( Dutch , literally "Reichsdenkmal", in the sense of a national monument ) is a cultural monument in the Netherlands that is at least 50 years old and has been placed under monument protection because of its beauty, its importance for science or its cultural and historical value .

Monumentenwet

The basis for recognition as a Rijksmonument is the monumentenwet (Monument Protection Act) of 1988, which places architectural monuments , ground monuments and monument ensembles or entire views of the town under protection. Movable cultural monuments are not covered by the law. There are tax breaks and various subsidy programs for the maintenance of the Rijksmonumente.

The objects placed under protection are marked with a white and blue enamel sign, the protection symbol according to the Hague Convention .

According to Article 1 of the Monuments Act of 1988, the Rijksmonumente are recorded in the monument register, which is comparable to the German list of monuments , and transferred to the object database (ODB), which is maintained by the monument protection authority Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed (formerly Rijksdienst voor Archeologie, Cultuurlandschap en Monumenten (RACM)) is operated. Register and database are accessible online.

Number and distribution

The Netherlands has more than 63,000 Rijksmonumenten, of which almost 1500 are archaeological objects and around 350 are protected ensembles, city and village views.

A related type of protection is the so-called gemeentelijke monumenten (municipal monuments ). A municipality can decide to put a cultural monument on the list of municipal monuments if it is not of national or even global significance, but is of regional importance. The same applies to the provinces, which can elevate a regionally important monument to a provinciaal monument . The provinces of North Holland and Drenthe in particular make use of this option . A lower level is the designation of a cultural monument as Beeldbepalend pand or Karakteristiek pand (imaging or characteristic building), which can also be awarded at community level. However, only the facade and the canopy of a building are protected here.
