Biju Janata Dal ( BJD , Oriya : ବିଜୁ ଜନତା ଦଳ) is an Indian party that is present in the state of Odisha .

history

The party was founded on December 15, 1997 by Naveen Patnaik , son of the eponymous former Chief Minister of Orissa Biju Patnaik . He has been party chairman since then. Almost 30 years earlier, Biju Patnaik and the Utkal Congress had tried to found a regional party for Orissa, but it failed. The BJD was a spin-off from the Janata Dal (JD) party after the JD party leadership refused to negotiate a coalition with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the run-up to the upcoming parliamentary election . From 1998 to 2009, the Biju Janata Dal was a member of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance . Before the 2009 election , she joined the party alliance known as the Third Front . The party is considered to be social liberal and social democratic and is located in the political center.
