Naveen Patnaik (born October 16, 1946 in Cuttack , Orissa ) is an Indian politician and writer.

Life

His parents are the politicians Biju Patnaik and Gyan Patnaik. His sister is the writer Gita Mehta . Patnaik studied at the University of Delhi . In 1996 he began to get involved politically within the Janata Dal . In 1997, when he split off from Janata Dal, he founded the Biju Janata Dal party . The external cause of the split were disputes over which party should be supported by Janata Dal in the upcoming parliamentary election, the Congress Party or the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Patnaik and with him the Biju Janata Dal stood up for an alliance with the BJP. In 1999, Patnaik became Minister of Mines and Natural Resources in the cabinet of Atal Bihari Vajpayee . Patnaik has been Odisha's Chief Minister since 2001 . He is chairman of the political party Biju Janata Dal, which is present in Odisha .

In addition to his political activities, he works as a writer. He published three books. A special feature is that he speaks the national language Oriya only with some difficulty and cannot speak it freely because his actual mother tongue is English. At political meetings he has to read his speeches in Oriya in English from the paper and in Odisha's parliament he debates in English.
