Biqueli ( Biceli , Bikeli , Biquele , formerly Pala ) is an East Timorese place and Suco in the administrative office of Atauro ( municipality of Dili ).

The place Biqueli ( Pala ) is located on the coast in the southeast of Sucos. The place is at an altitude of 110  m . The primary school Escola Primaria No. is located here . 2 biqueli . There is also a secondary school, medical station and helipad for emergencies.

2076 inhabitants (2015) live in Biqueli, of which 1052 are men and 1024 women. The population density is 70.0 inhabitants / km². There are 418 households in the Suco. Almost 92% of the population name Dadu'a , a dialect of Wetar, as their mother tongue . Slightly more than 1% speaks the Wetar dialect Rahesuk . Almost 6% speak Tetum Prasa as their mother tongue and a small minority speak Makasae . The predominantly Protestant inhabitants of northern Atauro are unusual for the predominantly Catholic East Timor . They were evangelized from the neighboring island of Alor by Dutch Calvinists in the 20th century.

The Suco forms the north of the Atauro island administration office. The Banda Sea surrounds most of the sucos. This is where the Strait of Ombai and the Strait of Wetar meet. The neighboring Suco Beloi is to the southwest . The northern tip is Cape Ponta Akrema .

Before the 2015 territorial reform, Biqueli had an area of ​​23.84 km². Now it is 29.67 km² after the border with Beloi was moved to the south. This is how Cape Ponta Mano Tala on the west coast and the town of Arlo to the south came to Biqueli.

A paved road connects Biqueli along the east coast with Mau-Meta in the south of the island. The village of Akrema ( Acrema ) is located on the east coast between the capes Ponta Akrema and Ponta Nussalo . Further south are the places Baruana , Belém ( Belem ), Uaro-Ana ( Uaroana ), Biqueli ( Pala ), Watupo and Ilicnamo ( Ilinamu ). On the west coast are the villages of Vatuo ( Vatuu , Fatu'u ), Iliana and, somewhat inland, the places Diana , Douro ( Doro ) and Arlo. There are primary schools in Iliana and Belém.

The four Aldeias Ilicnamo , Ilidua Douro , Pala and Uaro-Ana are located in the Suco .

history

In Arlo, the researchers found traces of villages that were inhabited 2,500 to 3,000 years ago. The rock paintings show showing crocodiles and marine mammals , among other things . One picture shows the hunt for a whale. No such representations on rock paintings are known from East Timor.

politics

In the elections of 2004/2005 was Manuel Barreto elected Chefe de Suco and in 2009 re-elected. In 2016 he was replaced by Daniel Martins.
