The Diocese of Port-Vila ( Latin : Dioecesis Portus Vilensis ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in the island state of Vanuatu with its seat in Port Vila . Episcopal church is the Sacre Coeur Cathedral.

history

The first missionaries of the Marist Fathers came to the New Hebrides in 1848. Later, for nearly forty years, there were no Catholic missionaries on the islands, which encouraged the missionary work of Presbyterians and Anglicans . The Catholic mission began again in 1887. Pope Leo XIII. founded the Apostolic Prefecture New Hebrides on February 19, 1901 from cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate New Caledonia . On March 22, 1904, she was raised to the Apostolic Vicariate and on June 21, 1966 with the Apostolic Constitution Prophetarum voces to the diocese of Port-Vila.
