history

The name " Bizau " ( mhd : " Bützow ", dialect: " Büzau " or " Büza ") is divided into two parts. The first part of the name " Biz " should be derived from the mhd. "Bütze" for "Lache" / " Pfütze ". The second part of the name " au " has its roots in the alluvial forest . Bizau would therefore be understood as the Puddle Au .

The place was first mentioned in a document by Goswin von Ems from 1297. The Habsburgs ruled the places in Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and Upper Austria ( Freiburg im Breisgau ). From 1805 to 1814 the place belonged to Bavaria, then again to Austria. For Austrian province of Vorarlberg Bizau heard since its founding 1861 . The place was part of the French occupation zone in Austria from 1945 to 1955.

Population development

The proportion of foreigners at the end of 2002 was 6.7 percent. From 1991 to 2001 both the migration balance and the birth balance were positive. In the following decade, emigration was stronger than immigration, but the deficit was offset by the birth balance.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality of Bizau was awarded by the Vorarlberg state government on February 16, 1929 and shows three natural fir trees rising from the green lawn on a shield divided by silver over red. The middle fir is slightly higher than the two outer ones. In the original version, the shield is surrounded by an ornamented bronze-colored border. The (uprooted) fir was a symbol that used to lead almost all of the Bregenzerwald communities.
