The head of the family is the 70-year-old Nikolas Nicholaison. His wife, Ellen, comes from England and, even after 40 years of marriage, still does not feel quite a part of it. The future heir of the Nicolaisons and managing director of the shipping company is the only son Klaus who suffers from his overpowering father. He had married his wife Elgte against the will of the family. After the marriage failed, Elgte lived in a sanatorium and suffered from depression, which made it difficult for her to cope with life. They both have two sons, Patrick and Eric. The latter has a lot of his grandfather and a tendency to dishonorable deals that are on the verge of legality.
