Infestation of the skin

Blastomycosis is a fungal infection of the skin and lungs caused by dimorphic fungi. The pathogen enters the body via the respiratory tract and gradually spreads over the entire organism . It is not uncommon for blastomycoses to be fatal. Amphotericin B is usually used for treatment .

There are three types of blastomycosis.

European blastomycosis

The European blastomycosis is also Cryptococcus - mycosis or cryptococcosis which are sold by Cryptococcus neoformans (alternative name Cryptococcus bacillisporus ) is triggered.

North American blastomycosis

The North American blastomycosis is of B. dermatitidis triggered. It begins as an enlarged bronchitis , affects the lungs and skin and leads to severe emaciation .

It occurs predominantly in North America and is named after Thomas C. Gilchrist as Gilchrist disease (Gilchrist's disease), Gilchrist (Rixford) disease or Gilchrist's disease .

South American blastomycosis

The South American blastomycosis is caused by the fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis (synonym Blastomyces brasiliensis triggered) and has a variety of different skin deformations and ulcers result, especially at the mucosa and lymph nodes .

It occurs in rural areas of Latin America - most commonly in Brazil - where the temperatures are mild and the humidity is high . Most of the afflicted are men over 30; Women and children are rarely affected. Around a quarter of the illnesses are fatal.
