history

Boadicea was written by Enya, her producer Nicky Ryan and Roma Ryan for the British television broadcaster BBC along with other songs for the documentary The Celts in 1986. The Celts was released in 1986 as a six-part television series about the life of the Celts with a soundtrack composed entirely by Enya, the former singer of the Irish band Clannad . Enya released the song along with most of the other songs in the series on her debut album Enya in 1987 and again on the album The Celts in 1992 and the compilation album The Very Best of Enya in 2009.

In 1992 the song Boadicea was used for the soundtrack of the film Sleepwalkers (German title Schlafwandler ) by Stephen King and used here for the opening sequence as well as in the film and in the credits. The song found other uses in the South Korean film Tell Me Something ( Telmisseomding ) and in the television series Criminal Minds (episode Ashes and Dust , 2nd season).

Cover and sampler

Fugees

In 1996 the band Fugees, consisting of Wyclef Jean , Lauryn Hill and Pras Michel , used the song as a sample for their hit Ready or Not , but without asking Enya for permission in advance. Enya waived her indictment, but her name was subsequently stuck on the plates. Ready or Not became an international success and reached top positions in the charts in numerous countries. It was the number 1 hit on the singles chart in Great Britain , reached number 2 in Enya's home country Ireland and also made it into the top 10 in most other European countries. In the USA, it reached number 69 on the Billboard Hot 100 and 22nd place on Billboard Hot R & B / Hip-Hop Songs.

German language adaptations

The German synth-pop duo Wolfsheim used the piece as early as 1990 and wrote a German-language version with the title Übergrün Wiesen . The piece was written in 1990 in collaboration with the Swiss musician Carlos Perón , but was not published at the time. Due to the later conflicts between the two Wolfsheim members Peter Heppner and Markus Reinhardt , the title was initially kept under lock and key after the duo broke up. It wasn't until 2014 that the piece was officially published for the first time on the sampler Der Eisenberg Sampler - Vol. 4 . The German text and the production come from the collaboration between Heppner and Perón.

In 2011 a small excerpt was used as a sample in the song The First Winter by the German singer Cassandra Steen , which appeared on the album Mir so nah .

In addition, the German rapper Fler 2020 used "the iconic buzz" for his song Lost with Sido .

More cover versions

The American progressive power metal band Crimson Glory reinterpreted the piece on their 1999 album Astronomica and used it as an intro entitled "March to Glory".

In 2004 the song was used again as a sample of twelve notes, this time in the song I don't wanna know produced by Sean Combs alias P. Diddy and recorded by Mario Winans . This song also reached positions at the top of the charts internationally, including number 1 hit in Great Britain and Germany and number 2 in the USA. Enya received 60% of the proceeds and was named as a participating artist, so the song was officially performed by Mario Winans feat. P. Diddy & Enya appeared.

In 2008 the Italian DJ Francesco Zeta released a hardstyle version of the song under the name "Fairyland" .
