Career

Youth of 1. FC Cologne

Schommers had been working in the youth department of 1. FC Cologne since 2006 . From the 2010/11 season he took over the B1 juniors (U17) as head coach and became German B junior champion in his first season . He coached the team for two more seasons and took over the A-Juniors (U19) for the 2013/14 season , who played in the A-Juniors' Bundesliga . Schommers has been a soccer teacher since 2015 .

1. FC Nuremberg

For the 2017/18 season , Schommers was Michael Köllner's assistant coach at the second division club 1. FC Nürnberg . Together they rose to the Bundesliga . After 21 match days of the 2018/19 season, the club was in the last place in the Bundesliga with 12 points, whereupon Köllner was relieved of his duties and Schommers took over the team as interim coach. Under Schommers, the team got 7 points up to the 33rd matchday, which means they were relegated one matchday before the end of the season. Before the last match day, 1. FC Nürnberg announced that Schommers would leave the club at the end of the season. The club finally finished the season with 19 points in the last place in the table.

1. FC Kaiserslautern

On September 19, 2019, Schommers took over the third division team of 1. FC Kaiserslautern , which at that time was 14th after the 8th matchday of the 2019/20 season with 9 points, as the successor to Sascha Hildmann . After the FCK had stood on a direct relegation place with 13 points after the 14th matchday, the team won 5 games in a row and climbed into the middle of the table, with the deficit on the promotion relegation place was 4 points. This was followed by a series of 8 games without a win, which is why they were only 2 points ahead of the relegation places after the 27th matchday. After that match day, the season had to be interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic . When game operations were resumed after two and a half months with ghost games, FCK won 6 of the last 11 games and finished the season with 55 points in 10th place in the secured midfield. The release of goalkeeping coach Gerry Ehrmann at the end of February caused a sensation, which is why Schommers was attacked by parts of the fans.
