Postage stamps from 1874 issued by the Deutsche Reichspost

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

After no new postage stamps appeared in 1873, the postage stamp year 1874 of the Deutsche Reichspost is the second after 1872 in which postage stamps were issued in the German Reich. The common currency in the German Empire was the mark , but the postage stamps appeared until the end of 1874 with the two currency indications Taler and Groschen for Northern Germany and Gulden and Kreuzer for Southern Germany , as these were still in circulation. The two kingdoms of Bavaria and Württemberg retained their postal sovereignty until after the First World War and thus issued their own postage stamps (see Postal History and Postage Stamps of Bavaria and Postal History and Postage Stamps of Württemberg ).

In addition to the two currency indications "Kreuzer" and "Groschen", the issues are also differentiated philatelically according to the type of eagle coin . In the first phase, stamps with the so-called "small breast shield" and from June 1872 with the "large breast shield" were issued.
