Bruce Sterling
Bruce Sterling (* 14. April 1954 in Brownsville , Texas ) is an American science fiction - writers .
Life
In 1974, Sterling attended the renowned Clarion workshop for aspiring science fiction and fantasy authors.
His first publication was the short story Man-Made Self , which appeared in Lone Star Universe in 1976 , by Steven Utley and Geo. W. Proctor- edited anthology of Texan authors. Sterling, like Utley, was a member of Texas' Turkey City Writers , a group of Austin -based SF writers . Sterling's debut novel was Involution Ocean (1977, German "The Dust Planet" (1984), later "The Dust Ocean ").
Sterling is considered a co-founder of cyberpunk . He was nominated several times for the Nebula Award and the Hugo Award , the latter he received in 1999. He has lived in Turin since 2007 after having lived in Belgrade for several years . He is married to the Serbian author and filmmaker Jasmina Tešanović in his second marriage .
Sterling also became known for his political commitment. In 1992 he published his first non-fiction book The Hacker Crackdown with the subtitle Law and Disorder in the Electronic Frontier ; In it he describes the hacker scene of the late 1980s and decisive events such as the US Secret Service's attack on credit card fraudsters, the raid on Steve Jackson Games and the establishment of the Electronic Frontier Foundation . This book has been freely published in electronic form on the Internet .
Sterling is also one of the leading figures behind the Viridian ("Cyber-Greens") design movement .
Sterling also writes articles on pop culture , popular science, and travel that appear in various American magazines.
