Brucella abortus (also called Bang bacteria ) is a bacterium from the genus Brucella . It is the causative agent of bovine brucellosis , which mainlycauses abortions in cattle(hence the name abortus ), but which also causes disease in humans and causes undulating fever (→ Bang's disease ).

It is a pleomorphic, aerobic , gram-negative and sporeless rod. Brucelles make very high demands on culture media . They grow slowly and best at 37 ° C and microaerophilic conditions, forming small, glossy and transparent colonies after two to four days. There are six biovars .

Since the genetic differences between the Brucellae are very small (<10%) and they can not be distinguished on the basis of their ribosomal RNA , Verger et al. (1985) propose to combine all Brucellae in one species ( B. melitensis ). In 1988, however, it was decided to keep the six previously known classic species names in order to avoid confusion in the medical literature and to take account of the different pathogenicity for humans.
