content
Ludger Spengler has lived as a priest in a Franciscan monastery in the Catholic cathedral for over 20 years. He had doubts about his vocation when he met Theres Spitzer, the mother of his piano student Beppa, and fell in love with her. Torn between his vow and his love for the mother of three and innkeeper, he leaves the order after numerous entanglements and difficult decisions. After Theres becomes pregnant by him, she and Ludger get married. When those around him reacted with incomprehension and hostility, the family moved to Bremerhaven and dared to start over there.
Others
The Franciscan fathers call their own body "brother donkey" because it often reacts like a donkey: stubborn and headstrong. Like all of his series characters, main actor Dieter Pfaff helped develop the role of Ludger Spengler . The film was shot at locations in Münster and Bremerhaven, the recordings played in the monastery were made in the Lüne monastery in Lüneburg.
The first episode was broadcast on Wednesday, October 9, 1996, the other one-hour episodes ran from October 11, 1996 on Fridays at 9:15 p.m., the last three episodes at Christmas. Despite great success - the series was awarded the prestigious Grimme Prize and the Golden Lion in 1997 - Brother Esel was not continued after 14 episodes.
