Bruno Zumino
Bruno Zumino (born April 28, 1923 in Rome , Italy , † June 22, 2014 in Berkeley , California , United States ) was an Italian professor of theoretical physics .
biography
Zumino received his physics diploma (Laurea) from the University of Rome in 1945 . 1951 to 1953 he was a researcher at New York University , where he was assistant professor of physics from 1953 to 1968. Zumino was at CERN from 1968 to 1981 (where he was a Senior Physicist in the late 1970s).
In 1981 he was appointed professor at the University of California, Berkeley . Since 1994 he has been an emeritus . In 1959/60 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study . From 1984 to 1987 he was on the advisory committee of the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara .
Zumino dealt with quantum field theory also in the field of mathematical physics. For example, he worked with Gerhart Lüders on the spin statistics theorem in the 1950s and on chiral anomalies in the 1980s. In 1973 Bruno Zumino (then working at CERN) and Julius Wess (then working at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Karlsruhe ) were some of the first to develop the theoretical concept of a supersymmetry , which was used as a candidate for great unified theories and as a candidate for the dark Matter is under discussion. The Wess-Zumino-Witten model in conformal field theory is named after him.
He was married to the physicist Mary Gaillard .
