Bud Cort (born March 29, 1948 as Walter Edward Cox in New Rochelle , New York ) is an American actor and comedian as well as director and screenwriter . He played his best-known role in 1971 in the classic Harold and Maude .

Life

Bud Cort was born to band leader and pianist Joseph Parker Cox and journalist Alma Mary Court and grew up with three sisters and one brother in Rye, New York. In 1966 he graduated from the Catholic Iona Preparatory School in New Rochelle.

In 1967 he began studying design at New York University , which he dropped out in 1969 to become an actor. He studied with Stella Adler , played in commercials and appeared as a stand-up comedian in New York . In 1969 he starred in Stuart Hagmann's film Bloody Strawberries , which addressed the American student revolts of 1968 and received the jury award in Cannes . In 1969 he took part in the film Sweet Charity , which is based on the musical of the same name. He was discovered in New York by Robert Altman . This gave him a small role in his war comedy MASH in 1970 , then he cast Cort in the same year for the lead role in his next film Brewster McCloud . In 1971, Cort played the lead role of the suicide-obsessed character Harold in the classic film Harold and Maude . The black comedy was initially a flop , but later achieved cult status worldwide. Bud Cort was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actor for this role . He was then offered the role of Billy Bibbit in the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest , which he declined in order not to be committed to depictions of the mentally disturbed.

In the 1970s, other leading roles in film and Broadway plays followed. In 1979 he was in a serious car accident on the way back from a Frank Sinatra concert. He suffered a fractured skull, several cuts in the face, a broken arm and a broken leg and lost several teeth. He had to spend several months in the hospital for plastic surgery and interrupt his career. With his new face, he then no longer got a leading role, since then he has mainly been cast for character roles in independent films . In these films he was best known for his “ chameleon-like versatility”. Cort acted as director and screenwriter for the German television channel ZDF in 1989 in its documentary series Hotels in a film about the Hôtel de Paris .

In the 1980s he appeared more and more on television, including a television version of the Invasion of Mars . The 1987 film Bates Motel , a sequel to Psycho , in which he played the lead role , also falls during this period . Since the 1990s he has appeared again in smaller roles in feature films, including ... And Life Goes On (1993), Heat , I Woke Up Early the Day I Died (1998), Dogma (1999), Because I'm A Girl ( 1999), Pollock (2000), South of Heaven, West of Hell (2000), Die Tiefseetaucher (2004) and Number 23 (2007). He also starred in the television series Arrested Development (2006) and Criminal Minds (2010).

In the 1970s, Bud Cort lived in the house of his close friend Groucho Marx for several years .
